    Bongeunsa is a working Buddhist temple on Bongeunsa-ro. Seoul's tourism guide traces its foundation to 794 and describes programmes introducing Buddhist culture. That is a different visit from the retail setting at COEX. Put the temple first in your own plans if the historic and religious setting matters more than browsing shops.     Why it makes the list

    There is a clear subject to the visit: temple grounds and Buddhist practice, rather than another shopping district. You do not need to book an overnight experience merely to be interested in the place.

    The trade-off

    The temple's religious activities take priority. A general sightseeing visit and a templestay programme are different arrangements; an old travel article cannot confirm today's programme language, availability or access.

    Make it work

    Use 봉은사, 531 Bongeunsa-ro. Follow posted photography and entry notices, leave worshippers space and check programme arrangements directly with the temple if you want to participate.

  3. A historic landscape instead of another shopping stop

    3. Seolleung and Jeongneung Royal Tombs

    서울 선릉과 정릉 (선정릉)

    Seonjeongneung is the combined name for Seolleung and Jeongneung. The site contains the royal tombs of King Seongjong, Queen Jeonghyeon and King Jungjong. Paths and wooded grounds give the visit a different shape from a palace courtyard or an indoor exhibition. Choose it when you want to spend the afternoon looking at a historic landscape.     The burial grounds provide one focused subject, with space between the sights. It is a useful alternative to planning a second mall stop simply because you are already in Gangnam.

    The trade-off

    This is a managed heritage site with admission and opening rules, not an unrestricted city park. Check the current calendar, including closure days, before setting out; grounds access can differ from access to individual structures.

    Make it work

    Search for 서울 선릉과 정릉 at 1 Seolleung-ro 100-gil. Jeongneung alone is ambiguous because Seoul has another royal tomb with that name north of the river.

  4. A shopping street with room to choose as you go

    4. Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong

    신사동 가로수길

    Garosu-gil is the Sinsa-dong street associated with galleries, designer shops and browsing. The neighbouring side streets, often called Serosu-gil, add other places to look for food and coffee.     Why it makes the list

    Choose one current shop or cafe as an anchor and leave the rest undecided. That keeps the outing useful even if your group has different shopping interests.

    The trade-off

    A famous street name does not mean that every business from an older itinerary is still there. Check the shop's own location and opening notice before making it the anchor of your afternoon.

    Save 신사동 가로수길 and the exact address of the business you intend to visit. The Sinsa Station photograph provides area context; use a current route to the shop itself.

  5. A wooded park when shopping is not the plan

    5. Maeheon Citizens' Forest

    매헌시민의숲 (양재시민의숲)

    Maeheon Citizens' Forest is in Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu. Older maps and photographs often use Yangjae Citizens' Forest, which remains part of the nearby station's English name. The park's wooded areas and lawns make it a different choice from the shopping streets farther north. It also contains memorial spaces, so the grounds are not simply a backdrop for activities.     Why it makes the list

    Put it on the list when trees and an open-ended park visit are the reason to travel, rather than something to squeeze between shops. The distinction is geographical as well as practical: this stop is in Seocho, not Cheongdam.

    The trade-off

    Allow for the journey south and the weather. Access to a public park does not automatically include use of sports facilities, organised activities or entry to its memorial hall.

    Make it work

    Save 매헌시민의숲 at 99 Maeheon-ro. The nearby station is Yangjae Citizens' Forest on the Shinbundang Line. Check a named facility separately if it is the main reason for your visit.

These places are spread across Gangnam-gu and Seocho-gu. Plan them as alternatives, not one continuous walking route. Save the exact Korean destination names before travelling. Temple activities, heritage access and individual shop hours need their own checks.
