    Why it makes the list

    This is our first choice for someone already browsing Insadong's craft shops. Seeing materials and construction in a museum gives you better questions to ask later: what is it made from, how was it made, and who made it? The connection is editorial; the museum does not certify nearby merchandise.

    The trade-off

    A museum visit is not a hands-on workshop. Do not assume that a craft programme or the Children's Museum can be joined with an ordinary walk-in visit.

    Make it work

    Find the museum at 4 Yulgok-ro 3-gil, near Anguk Station Exit 1. The general galleries list 10:00–18:00, with Friday evening opening to 21:00. General admission is free, with exceptions for some exhibitions. The Korean visitor page notes a public-holiday exception to the usual Monday closure; children's sessions still close on Mondays. Recheck before a holiday visit.

The permanent exhibition follows Seoul from the Joseon capital through later periods to the present.     Choose this before another palace stop if you want to understand how the pieces of central Seoul relate. It is a city-history choice, distinct from the National Museum of Korea's broader collection in Yongsan.

    The trade-off

    The subject is the development of Seoul, not a survey of contemporary artists. Someone seeking a particular painting or a current art show should check MMCA's programme instead.

    The main museum is at 55 Saemunan-ro. Its visitor page lists free admission, regular hours of 09:00–18:00 and a 17:30 last entry, with Friday evening opening to 22:00. Mondays and 1 January are listed closures. Check notices for the actual visit date.

MMCA Seoul's visitor information distinguishes paid exhibitions and ticket arrangements, so the useful question is which show you want to spend time with.     Why it makes the list

    This moves to the top of the list if a current exhibition already interests you. Without that interest, a little advance reading matters more here than it does for choosing the craft or city-history displays.

    The trade-off

    A museum opening time does not guarantee admission to every show. Special exhibitions may have their own reservation, capacity and ticket conditions; a general free-entry window is not a substitute for checking those conditions.

    Make it work

    Use the Seoul branch at 30 Samcheong-ro, not Gwacheon or Deoksugung. Listed hours are 10:00–18:00, extended to 21:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The listed holiday closures include 1 January, Lunar New Year's Day and Chuseok. Prices vary by exhibition; use the museum's current notice before committing.

Before you go

Check the named museum and the exhibition you intend to see, not just a map's opening label. Ordinary Mondays rule out the craft and history museums; MMCA Seoul follows a different schedule. Holiday exceptions and temporary gallery closures need a fresh check. For families, the craft museum's children's sessions have a separate advance-booking requirement. These are alternative afternoon anchors, not a promised all-indoor walking route between buildings.
